Check out our exclusive interview with the rising talent below.

Q: How did you get your start in music?

Slim: “I got my start in music just being raised around it my whole life. I grew up in a household full of family members who loved music from my father, to my mother, to my grandmother, to siblings and cousins. It was kind of inevitable for me to pursue music. I started taking it seriously at 13 years old. There were also so many people that I was inspired by as a kid that were in music like Kriss Kross. I was intrigued when watching them perform or hearing them on the radio.”

Q: How would you say that being from Harlem shaped your lifestyle and your music?

Slim: “Being from Harlem shaped everything about me from how I dress, to how I talk, to how I carry myself in the world, to my attitude, sound, delivery, vibe, everything about me. There are a lot of creatives in Harlem because of its rich culture. There’s so much history here; jazz, the Harlem Renaissance, the Apollo Theatre, etc. The culture is immersive. You have no choice but to be inspired by it. It can only make you greater if you embrace it.”

Q: Who would you say are your musical heroes and why?

Slim: “I would definitely cite Jay-Z as one of my musical heroes because of his consistency in rap. He’s also business savvy, highly intelligent, and witty. As an artist, he overcame so much adversity and accomplished things a lot of people thought he wouldn’t. He’s in a position most artists aspire to be in. I would also say Birdman is among my musical heroes. He’s the number 1 stunna, always on point with his jewelry game, businesses, and I like his rhymes. Lastly, I would have to say Tupac because of his drive, work ethic, and what he stood for. The fact that they’re still releasing music from him shows his lasting legacy and imprint on the world.“

Q: At this point in your career, what achievement would you say you are most proud of, musically?

Slim: “Definitely going to Osaka in Japan to perform. My first time traveling out there was in 2015, two years after me and my brother released our mixtape, The Preface. In Osaka, they have an infatuation with Harlem and Hip-Hop. When we were performing, they knew all the lyrics to our songs. We had 3 shows lined up before we went out to Japan but upon being there, we were asked to perform at other venues so we extended our stay at least a week. The second time we went, which was in 2018, we traveled to Osaka and Tokyo and we stayed for a month.”

Q: Do you plan on going back anytime soon?

Slim: “Yeah, I definitely want to go back soon. Hopefully this summer.”

Q: Should we be on the lookout for some new music?

Slim: “Yes! I definitely have a few singles and videos dropping soon on my Instagram @droptopslim, and on YouTube; Squareoffgang and on SoundCloud; Droptopslim — also check out my latest single, “Chanel & Dior” on YouTube!”
