Lish 2X Makes Being Covered Look Fly With New EP
Lish 2X is proof that you can be covered from head to toe and still turn heads. The Muslim female Hip-Hop artist is bringing music, modesty and fashion together with her latest EP, COVERGIRL: A Covered Girl, a project that puts her personality and style front and center while staying true to her faith.
Released through Halal Gal Entertainment, the four track EP includes “Lish Got Next,” “Covered Girl (IRL),” “L’Oréal” featuring Dèja Destinèe and “Very Shady.”
But Covered Girl is bigger than four records. For Lish, fashion is part of the music.
From her lyrics to her visuals, she plays with the idea of what a “covered girl” can look like. Think runway fashion meeting Islamic couture, with Lish adding her own Hip-Hop flavor to the mix. She can step out fully covered and still make the clothes, the look and the moment her own.
And that is the point.
Lish is not trying to separate being Muslim from being fashionable or being an emcee. She brings all three into the same room.
Her love affair with fashion has been years in the making. A Fashion Institute of Technology alum with runway experience, Lish understands clothes beyond simply putting together a good outfit. Fashion is another form of creative expression for her, and Covered Girl gives her the opportunity to connect that world directly to her music.
She also brings something different to female Hip-Hop.
At a time when women continue to command attention throughout the genre, Lish offers another perspective. Her music does not depend on compromising her personal beliefs to make noise. She can spit, have personality, talk her talk and look fly while maintaining the boundaries that are important to her.
That balance has been part of her journey for years. Projects including The Ramadan Album and The Ramadan Album Reloaded placed her faith directly into her artistry, while records like “Not Savage” celebrated Muslim women and hijab.
Now, COVERGIRL: A Covered Girl pushes the conversation further by making fashion an even bigger part of the presentation.
“Lish has her own look, her own sound and most importantly, she knows exactly who she is,” says her publicist, Lynn Hobson.
That confidence comes through in the music.
There is no costume here and no attempt to fit neatly into somebody else’s idea of what a female rapper should look or sound like. Lish 2X is creating her own visual and musical identity, one where faith does not cancel fashion and modesty certainly does not cancel style.
With COVERGIRL: A Covered Girl, Lish 2X is making her position clear.
She can be Muslim. She can be Hip-Hop. She can love high fashion.
And yes, she can do all three while covered.
