2 Chainz Apologizes to Keith Lee After Their Den of Kings Exchange: ‘What I Said and What I Meant Were Two Different Things’

2 Chainz is cleaning it up. After his tense Den of Kings exchange with Keith Lee clipped up all over the internet, the Atlanta rapper went to X on Tuesday and did something rap legends don’t always do — he apologized, out loud, and said he already talked to Keith man to man.

Story: 2 Chainz’s own post on X today, via XXL; Den of Kings, Kirk Franklin’s podcast.

“I got a chance to speak to Keith after the podcast and it was all love. I know my words offended some people and I apologize for that. What I said and what I meant were two different things. I could’ve done a better job getting my point across.”

That’s the whole statement — no thread, no doubling down. He didn’t walk back everything he believes, but he owned the delivery, owned who it offended, and made clear the private conversation happened first and ended in love.

So how did we get here? The latest episode of Kirk Franklin’s Den of Kings — “I Am What I Am,” taped at Clark Atlanta University with Keith, Chainz, Mojo Brookzz and Desi Banks — was already a full ITSBIZKIT story before this: Kirk told 2 Chainz to his face that he’s sensitive, and that it’s been powerful. But the moment that ran away from the episode was Chainz pressing Keith about restaurant reviews — specifically, the bad review tied to his own Atlanta spot, Esco Restaurant & Tapas.

Chainz’s position, as the clips show, was that celebrity perks are earned, period: “I’m an entertainer, and obviously we get perks that other people don’t get. I don’t stand in line at the airport. I don’t do none of that because I done worked my ass off to do this.” He also questioned whether Keith’s strict diet from his fighting days colors how he judges food.

Keith’s answer is the whole reason his reviews carry weight. He sends family in ahead of him — anonymously — so he can judge the experience a regular customer gets. He told the room his mother-in-law couldn’t get served at Atlanta spots that suddenly had a table ready the second he walked in himself. “I don’t ever want to put nobody in a situation that they get a different experience only because they not Keith Lee,” he said.

There’s a wrinkle that made the backlash even louder: coverage of the exchange kept pointing out that Keith never publicly posted a review of Esco. The scathing Esco review that went viral back in 2024 came from fellow food critic Mr. Chimetime — and fans were quick to say Chainz had his critics mixed up. An earlier, since-deleted Instagram post from Chainz only poured gas on the fire, and the calls for a real apology got loud fast.

Why did this land so hard? Because Keith Lee isn’t a regular reviewer — he’s an economy. One Keith Lee review can put a line around the block or empty a dining room, and the people spending that money are regular folks trusting that his experience is the one they’ll get. We just told his story this morning: the man used to film for 40 followers and pretend 1,000 people were watching. So when a rap legend — and a restaurant owner himself — questions that method on camera, it was always going to clip up.

Credit where it’s due: Chainz handled the aftermath the grown way. Talk to the man privately, then say it publicly where everybody can see it. No sneak diss, no letting it fester.

But the question from the episode is still on the table: should celebrities get special treatment at restaurants because they earned the perks — or is one standard for everybody the entire point of Keith Lee?
