Tony Hawk’s “900” Skateboard Sells For Over $1 Million Dollars
Julien’s Auctions, the industry leading pop-culture memorabilia auction house, announces the results from “Tony Hawk: The 900 Collection” auction held yesterday at Loews Hollywood Hotel and online to a global audience. Many records were set and broken in this landmark sale, with the board Hawk used to land the groundbreaking “900” aerial trick in 1999 fetching a record-breaking $1.1M , more than double its estimate.
Widely revered as the pioneer of modern skateboarding, Tony Hawk cemented his place in the annals of sports history when he landed the first documented “900” — a trick involving two-and-a-half mid-air revolutions on a skateboard at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco.
Among the extraordinary rarities sold were the black and orange Adio “Tony Hawk” model sneakers $64,000 (nearly 13x the estimate), knee pads $57,600 (over 14x estimate) and helmet $115,200 (nearly 20x the estimate) that Hawk wore while executing the “900.”
Much like Muhammad Ali’s first heavyweight title, Serena Williams’ 23rd Grand Slam, and Michael Jordan’s game-winning shot in ’98, Hawk’s “900” wasn’t just a milestone — it was a redefining moment for the sport. It elevated skateboarding into the global spotlight and established Hawk not only as a legend in his field, but as one of the most revolutionary athletes in the history of modern sports.
“This historic result is not just a landing for Julien’s Auctions but for the culture of skateboarding and collecting. With the 900 Board shattering a world record, we’re truly catching some air—propelled by the passion of bidders and the enduring legacy of this iconic moment in sports history. It’s a privilege for us to honor such a groundbreaking achievement in skateboarding through this extraordinary sale.”– Martin Nolan, Co- Founder and Executive Director, Julien’s Auctions
Also sold was a 1982 Powell-Peralta signature pro model – the first pro model Hawk ever rode – which captured over $57,000, a Simpsons-themed winter coat gifted after his appearance on a 2003 episode went for $6,400 (more than 10x estimate), the 1999 X Games Vert Finals Bronze Medal went for $8,960 (more than double the estimate.) A rundown of the highlights can be found below.
With a track record of industry-shaping auctions, including record-setting sales like those of Princess Diana’s beloved “Caring Dress,” Michael Jackson’s white glove, Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress as well as iconic sales with items from David Lynch, Joan Rivers, Ringo Starr and Bob Dylan, Julien’s infuses trusted expertise with passionate collector enthusiasm, igniting well-deserved excitement around categories long overdue for the spotlight.
