Keith Lee Used to Film for 40 Followers and Pretend 1,000 People Were Watching

Before the sold-out restaurant lines and the reviews that can change a business overnight, Keith Lee was talking to basically nobody — and acting like the whole world was watching.

Keith sat down with Kirk Franklin on Den of Kings — the same episode where Kirk told 2 Chainz to his face that he’s sensitive — and told a come-up story nobody would guess from the man restaurants fear and love today.
Growing up in Detroit, Keith says he had social anxiety and never liked talking in front of people. He wasn’t the shining star — he was the kid who stayed in trouble, didn’t get good grades, and got kicked out of three schools. He got kicked out of Detroit public schools, and by sixth grade he was in Southfield — a suburb, “but still Detroit.”
Then came the camera. “What really changed my life in general was TikTok,” he said. With about 40 followers, Keith would set the camera up and pretend 1,000 people were watching, and just talk — day in, day out. His wife was pregnant with their first child at the time, so he’d cook for her and perform like they had a big audience. The real audience? Mostly his cousins and his mama.
That’s the part that should be framed on every creator’s wall. The confidence came before the crowd did. He didn’t wait until the followers showed up to act like somebody worth watching — he practiced in front of 40 people until the rest of the world caught on. Today, Keith Lee is one of the most powerful food critics on the internet, a man whose one review can make or break a restaurant. And it started with a Detroit kid with social anxiety, talking to his cousins and his mama like they were a thousand strangers.
Be honest — if you only had 40 followers, would you keep posting like 1,000 people were watching, or would you have quit?
