Kash Doll Taps Method Man to Star in “I’m The Prize” Video With Ebony Riley
Kash Doll knows exactly who the prize is — and she put Method Man in the video to prove the point. The Detroit rapper released the official video for “I’m The Prize,” featuring R&B singer Ebony Riley, on Friday, November 6, with the Wu-Tang Clan legend starring as her love interest. The single is out now via Kash Doll Enterprises under exclusive license to MNRK Records, and the video premiered on BET Jams.
Produced by OctaneThisThat, the record flips the script: Kash opens rapping from a man’s perspective, listing the gifts, money and grand gestures he believes make him valuable. Ebony Riley answers with the question at the record’s center — “If you’re the prize, then why does it cost so much?”
Method Man was never a backup plan. In an exclusive PEOPLE interview published on release day, Kash said he was the only person she pictured while making the song. “When I was making it, I seen Method Man the whole time,” she told PEOPLE. “It was like, I have to have him. I have to have him.” She admitted he has been a childhood crush since she first saw him in Mary J. Blige’s “Love @ 1st Sight” video — while drawing a clear line: “He’s gorgeous, of course, but he’s married and I respect that.” And he showed up ready: “When I say he learned the lyrics in one day and came on set knowing the lyrics to rap them was crazy,” she said. “He was patient. He was perfect. He was perfect.”
Directed by WhoIsHalo, the video plays out like a short film about a wealthy couple whose life looks perfect from the outside. He comes home late, an argument follows, and the person in the wrong somehow turns it around until she feels like the problem. “I wanted it to be very expensive, like a wife and a husband that have great careers, because people think that they have it all figured out, but this is what be going on in them houses,” Kash told PEOPLE. By the end, she packs her belongings and chooses herself.
For Kash, the message is the point: money can become a form of control, and a changed lifestyle can make leaving feel impossible. “You can’t leave when you want to because your whole lifestyle changed,” she said. Her own chapter looks different now: “I’m single, and I’m loving it, and I love myself, and I’m dating myself,” she told PEOPLE. “I want to pour all that energy into me right now.”
So who’s really the prize? Can money and gifts ever replace accountability and respect — and did Method Man steal the show? Drop your take in the comments.
