Akademiks Says He Made Six Figures From One Lil Durk Trial Livestream

Covering a trial paid like headlining one.

DJ Akademiks sat down on The Final Verdict podcast and broke down the business of his Lil Durk trial coverage — and the number he put on it stopped the panel cold. Ak says a single livestream of the trial ran 11 hours, peaked at 200,000 live viewers, and made him six figures.

And according to Ak, the money did not come from where most people assume. He says it came primarily from YouTube ad revenue, not Super Chats — while he was simulcasting on Kick, where he also says he has a deal.

The part that tells you everything about the streaming era: ending the broadcast was the hard part. Even after the audience fell from 200,000 to 89,000, Ak says he did not want to stop.

“It hurt my heart to hit end stream that day.”

Sit with that math. Eighty-nine thousand people still watching is a stadium and a half, hours deep into court coverage, and the ads running against that attention paid six figures in a single day. That’s the new economics of hip-hop media: the trial is the event, the stream is the venue, and the commentator who can hold an audience for 11 straight hours is running a business most traditional outlets would envy.

Ak also talked about the grind behind the number, including wanting to stream around 100 hours a month. Love him or hate him, the model is clear — when the biggest stories in the culture break, he turns his channel into the room everybody gathers in, and the platforms cut the check.

Watch the clip below. Is this the future of hip-hop coverage, or did Ak just catch lightning with the biggest trial in the culture?
